Cullum are proud to support International Women in Engineering Day

At Cullum, we like to see women excel in the engineering industry, which is often male dominated. We believe the success of our company is due to the hard work of our employees, many of which are women. By recognising the accomplishments of our female employees, we hope to promote the inclusion and normalisation of women in engineering.

Backing the Cause

We caught up with one of our apprentices, Izzy Burrell, about starting a career in engineering;

“Everyone at Cullum is really encouraging and I’ve gained lots of experience during my time as an apprentice.”

For women looking to start out as an engineer she says “My biggest piece of advice is to not be intimidated by the male dominance of the shop floor, you just have to get stuck in.”

As well as encouraging our current employees, we hope to inspire the next generation of women in engineering through our community out-reach program. During our 60thAnniversary event on 2ndMay, we worked with local schools to encourage careers in STEM industries. One school, Heanor Gate Science College, brought only female pupils to motivate them into starting a career in engineering. We worked to show these students that engineering is a great career choice despite the lack of female representation in the industry.

International Women in Engineering Day

On 23rdJune 2019, Cullum will be celebrating International Women in Engineering Day INWED.   This campaign was started by the Women’s Engineering Society in 2014 to draw attention to women working in the engineering sector and encourage young girls to consider a career in engineering.

This year, there is double the cause for celebration as the Women’s Engineering Society is celebrating 100 years since its formation at the end of First World War. The society was started by a group of pioneering women who wanted to continue their technical jobs after the end of the war. Today, the group has grown and evolved to be a network for women engineers, scientists and technologists across the world.

Since the first National Women in Engineering Day, the campaign has gained UNESCO patronage and has become a global day of celebration. This year, the INWED theme is #TransformTheFuture which focuses on encouraging career opportunities for women in engineering.
